USC’s Standard Patient won the Serious Games & Virtual Environments contest at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare. The USC Standard Patient allows doctors in training to talk to virtual patients, get realistic responses, and then receive feedback with an automated report on how they can keep improving. The system works through web browsers and has a free online community where medical and other clinical educators can create new patients. Funded by the Department of Defense, it is hoped that this new artificial intelligence-based technology will make medical education less expensive and improve patient safety.
