The Economist featured research by Stefan Scherer of the USC Institute for Creative Technologies and a colleague that could identify depression through digital analysis of speech. They had previously developed algorithms for detecting depression through minute facial signals. While a computerized diagnostic tool could never replace a trained therapist, it could help observe a patient during times when a doctor can’t. “Working together, human and machine should bring faster, more reliable diagnosis of depression,” the story noted.
