In a story headlined, “These Scientists Intend to Mess with your Mind“, the Orange County Register describes boundary-pushing virtual reality work coming out of the MxR Lab as well as other areas of ICT. The story features Project Blueshark, New Dimensions in Testimony, Fast Avatar Capture and the ICT Graphics Lab.
A day spent with the USC Mixed Reality Lab and its technology demos brings to mind a quote from “Blade Runner:” “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe.”
That’s how hard it is to put into words technologies that are designed to mess with our perception of what’s real.
Back in 2011 one of the engineers at that lab was Palmer Luckey. He worked on a team creating a virtual reality (VR) experience by holding a cellphone to your face. Luckey moved on in 2012 to start Oculus VR, an Irvine company that was snatched up by Facebook for $2 billion earlier this year.
Luckey has since landed on magazine covers (he’s staring out from under a hoodie on June’s Wired: “It will blow your mind.”). The lab, meanwhile, continues to plug away at mind-bending projects under the direction of Mark Bolas. Continue…
