A paper authored by ICT researchers was honored with a best paper award for the Emerging Concepts and Innovative Technologies subcommittee and nominated for best paper overall at the Interservice/Industry Training,Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Fla. The paper; “Building Interactive Virtual Humans for Training Environments,” draws on the experiences and years of research of ICT’s virtual humans group and addresses the research issues, technology and value of developing virtual humans for training environments. Additionally, it discuss the problems, issues and solutions involved in building such systems and currently implemented applications using virtual characters for negotiation training, virtual patients and tactical questioning. Patrick Kenny, Arno Hartholt, Jonathan Gratch, William Swartout, David Traum, Stacy Marsella and Diane Piepol authored the paper. Patrick Kenny presented it at the conference.
