Abstract: While “computers-as-social actors” theory implies that people may punish machines for undesirable behavior just like humans, perceptions of “free will” also affect recommendations for punishment. Participants endorsed less punishment for either machines or humans whose undesirable behavior was both caused by a “flaw in hardwiring” and not preventable by punishment.
