Andrew Gordon conducts interdisciplinary research at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies in the areas of artificial intelligence, natural language processing, human-computer interaction and training technologies. He currently leads the Narrative Group at ICT, which investigates storytelling and the human mind, exploring how people experience, interpret and narrate the events in their lives. Research efforts include the large-scale analysis of narrative in social media, the logical formalization of commonsense reasoning, and the creation of story-based learning environments. He also led the ICT UrbanSim project, which uses game-based technologies to enable U.S. Army commanders to practice the art of battle command, with a focus on stability and counterinsurgency operations. Gordon is a research associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Before joining USC in 2001, Gordon was a postdoctoral researcher at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, NY, in the area of knowledge management technologies. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the psychology department at the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science and B.A. in cognitive science from Northwestern University.
