Dr. William Swartout, Chief Science Officer at USC Institute for Creative Technologies, will deliver a plenary address at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) 2025 Fall Symposium Series on Thursday, November 6, from 9:00-10:30 am at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia.
Dr. Swartout’s presentation, “Re-thinking Education in the Face of AI,” will explore how ICT is transforming military education through human-AI collaboration. He will showcase the Army Writing Enhancement (AWE) tool, developed as part of ICT’s Artificial Intelligence Research Center of Excellence for Education—a two-year, $4.5 million congressional initiative led by researchers Benjamin Nye, Ning Wang, and Swartout.
AWE exemplifies ICT’s “human-AI teaming” philosophy by using artificial intelligence to enhance rather than replace human capabilities. Instead of generating essays for soldiers, the tool helps them brainstorm ideas and provides constructive feedback on completed drafts—encouraging critical thinking while improving written communication skills. Integrated into platforms like Google Docs and Microsoft 365, AWE has shown promising results in initial trials at Fort Leavenworth, with soldiers reporting improvements in both writing and analytical reasoning.
The AAAI Fall Symposium Series brings together AI researchers and practitioners in an intimate forum designed for in-depth feedback and discussion. The symposium runs November 6-8, 2025.
