Intelligent Operator Training Assistant

The IOTA is an attempt to enhance the Joint Fires and Effects Trainer System virtual training prototype effort at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, by allowing an increased throughput by enabling a single operator to oversee multiple training sessions with multiple students in parallel.

While providing Fort Sill with a best in class training experience, it is difficult for every soldier to experience the system as JFETS' training throughput is limited. One key factor in this limitation is that JFETS is a "man in the loop" training system requiring a human operator to oversee each training session. Due to the complexity of the tasks being trained and the rich nature of the JFETS virtual environment it isn't desirable or feasible to eliminate human operators from the training system. However, an Intelligent Operator Training Assistant has the potential to multiply the human operator's value to the system by allowing a single operator to singly manage multiple JFETS modules, overseeing several training sessions with multiple students in parallel. This IOTA will handle many of the more routine tasks an operator must perform freeing the operator to focus only on the "out of the ordinary" situations that occur.

  • Under the JFETS-E07 effort, the ICT will explore enhancements to the JFETS software architecture to support the IOTA. This will be accomplished by providing a suite of tools to the operators that will allow them to spend less time on routine tasks more on handling out of the ordinary situations and maintaining the quality of the overall training.
  • The ICT will demonstrate a working prototype for the JFETS-UTM handling calls for fire in an urban terrain setting. The working IOTA prototype demonstration will support one operator, three two-man Field Artillery
