Project Name

Intelligent Tutoring for Deception Detection

Project Description

The goal of the Intelligent Tutoring for Deception Detection project is to build intelligent support for learners using virtual humans to acquire investigative interviewing skills. Specifically, we are using existing virtual human knowledge authoring tools developed at ICT (from the Tactical Questioning project) to build scenarios that contain known deceptive behaviors, such as contradictions and inconsistencies in stories told by non-cooperative interviewees.  In addition, we seek to develop a prototype model of expert interviewing that is able to assess performance and provide feedback to learners using the system. In a small study, we intend to compare the system’s performance against the more traditional, video-based approaches commonly used by law-enforcement schoolhouses.

Job Description

We are seeking a graduate student (Ph.D. bound) Psychology student to work with ICT researchers in the development of both the prototype virtual human character and the pedagogical models used to support learning. Existing prototype authoring tools, developed by the Tactical Questioning and Virtual Human teams at ICT, will be used to create the virtual interviewee. The applicant would learn how to use these tools (which are generally intended for non-programmers), develop a prototype character, test with other ICT interns, synthesize feedback, and refine the character until ready for evaluation. Also, the applicant would support the design of the pedagogical and expert models used by the intelligent tutor. This would include documenting errors and authoring feedback messages that would be delivered to users during practice with the system. The position would also involve writing reports, documenting progress, and creating slides for internal presentations.

Requirements:
• Required:  Knowledge of current research and general findings on investigative interviewing, deception detection, confessions, and related areas.
• Required:  Experience designing and working on experiments in some or all of the areas above.
• Highly Preferred:  Basic understanding of artificial intelligence, programming (Java, C++, Eclipse, SVN, XML), and software development.
• Preferred:  Publications in areas identified above (any involving the training of investigative interviewing or deception detection, it would be a plus).
