Project Name
Recognizing and synthesizing culturally-specific nonverbal behavior Emotions Project
Project Description
ICT-Institute for Creative Technologies’ Emotion Project examines the role of emotion in human cognition and human-computer interaction and applies computational techniques in the modeling, recognition, and synthesis of emotional phenomena. The project involves the use (and possible extension) of a variety of human behavior recognition methods to assess the validity of social psychological theories concerning the cultural variability and social impact of nonverbal signals. This research will feed into the development of advanced virtual humans that are able to simulate realistic and culturally-specific emotional displays, and teach nonverbal skills
Job Description
The Emotion Project is seeking a research intern that will collaborate with a multi-university, interdisciplinary team on the development of interactive virtual humans that exhibit culturally-specific nonverbal behavior. This will involve working with and possibly extending a variety of advanced techniques for both recognizing and synthesizing subtle human nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, head gestures, eye gaze and speech signal analysis.
The ideal candidate will be a PhD student in computer science and have familiarity with:
• Autonomous agents and agent-based technology
• Embodied conversational agents/virtual humans
• Social psychological theories of emotion and interpersonal interaction
• Social psychological or anthropological theories of cultural differences
• Good programming skills
