Project Description
The Institute for Education Sciences (IES) supported, Advancing Middle School Teachers’ Understanding of Proportional Reasoning for Teaching project is building a virtual agent facilitator to help teachers with their professional development on mathematics skills. This intelligent tutoring system will help teachers learn new strategies and skills to help teach proportions to students. ICT will lead technical development, usability analysis, and iterative revision of the intervention software and interaction policies for module content. This role will include both the development of the web application used by teachers, as well as data pipelines to output usage and performance patterns that are integrated into analyses to evaluate efficacy and feasibility. ICT is working with USC’s Rossier School of Education on this project.

Job Description
The goal of the internship will be to contribute to a web application used by teachers, as well as data pipelines to output usage and performance patterns that are integrated into analyses to evaluate efficacy and feasibility. Specific tasks will involve improving a dialog-based tutor, building new user interfaces for a MERN-stack web application, and contributing to data analytics/machine learning which will help identify usage patterns by teachers using the system.

Preferred Skills
– JavaScript/Node.js, React, Python
– Basic AI Programming or Statistics
– Experience with data collection and recording video and audio files
